Michelle Norris: How to Merge Mission and Money to Create a Mega Event

It’s time for episode 30 of the Relentless: Real People, Real Results, Real World podcast!

In this episode I welcome in Michelle Norris – PaleoFX co-creator, chef extraordinaire, owner and founder of Instinct Catering Events, and founding partner of ID Life.

LISTEN UP!

SHOWNOTES:

  • In hindsight: “I would build our infrastructure first if I had it to do all over again. We did this as a hobbyist type model. We didn’t do this as a business. It was just to spread the message, get the movement going, and fill a need. That’s what we did. We saw a need and we filled it.”
  • What are examples of better infrastructure? “Having protocols in place, having a hierarchy, and knowing who has what answer. What happens is 20 of us are emailed and just 1 person should have been emailed.”
  • Roger: “Everyone gets hit with everything and everyone wears down in the process. Take things off of each others’ plates on focus on each others’ strengths.”
  • On efficiency: “We weren’t built efficiently because we didn’t know it [PaleoFX] would get this big and it would turn into an actual business.”
  • Taking action on advice from Robb Wolf: Incorporating digestive enzymes and turning off phone notifications.
  • A lesson from organizing sponsors and the expo floor: “Engaging with them on what their expectations are and meeting them…because they’re spending very good money to be there…It’s managing their expectations too. It’s finding out exactly what they’re expecting and letting them know if some of those things are not within your capability and letting them know what is and trying to go above and beyond.”
  • Roger: “So much of the enjoyment of an experience is what you expect going into it.”
  • A lesson from organizing speakers: “Without the speakers we wouldn’t have a conference. Making sure they are happy and that they get what they need.”
  • Have you dealt with divas? “This is a people business and that’s one of the best parts of it. But the toughest part of it is that it’s a people business. In every business you have a diva to deal with in some aspect.”
  • Most memorable food/drink consumed at PaleoFX:
  • One thing you did that you didn’t know you could do: “PaleoFX as a whole.”
  • How do you determine who takes the blame during a crisis? “In my opinion, it’s always my ultimate responsibility. It’s our show.”
  • On sticking with your dreams: “We went into personal debt after the first PaleoFX, but we knew in our hearts that it was something that was needed and something we believed in.”
  • On learning to respect money: “The more money that you make, the more people that you can touch, employ, and have involved. That resonated with us. That’s when it turned into a serious business.”
  • On price setting: “We set our ticket prices at the expectation of the public. We intentionally kept our ticket prices low because we didn’t want a high threshold to entry. Our position isn’t to make a lot of money. Our mission is to further the movement and bring in as many people as possible so they get education and empowered so that they become their own health advocates.”

Pam Leary: Strength, Positivity, and Protein Coffee

It’s time for episode 29 of the Relentless: Real People, Real Results, Real World podcast!

In this episode I welcome in Pam Leary – Relentless Fitness Strength Authority, personal trainer, aspiring physical therapist, dancer, and drinker of protein coffee.

LISTEN UP!

SHOWNOTES:

  • Paying it forward and finding a charity that you believe in.
  • Pam’s Protein Coffee:
    • Step #1: Mock creamer – mix tablespoon of protein powder + tablespoon of water in bottom of a cup
    • Step #2: Pour hot coffee over mixture
  • On practicing what you preach: “Usually I like to torture myself with what I torture them with.”
  • On inspiration: “Basically any DMX song is enough to get me riled up.”
  • On the importance of strength exercise: “So many females out there are spinning their wheels doing cardio and abs and cardio and abs and eating less food. It’s just not working for them, and they’re wondering why.”
  • On teamwork in dancing: “I’m on that treadmill and I want to die, but my teammate next to me is still going. Then when I’m on the dance floor, and I’m so tired or I feel like I can’t push through, you have that same team feel. I’ve always loved that.”
  • On making a hard decision to shift out of dance: “It was a really hard decision to say that I’m going to stop doing what I thought that I was born to do and what I thought that I was put on this Earth to do and what everyone is telling me I should do. The day that I said ‘ok, I’m going to transition and it’s alright’ I feel like a big weight lifted, and I haven’t looked back ever since.”
  • Experiencing injuries in dancing and having a timely hip pop contribute to changing her course.
  • Advice to those with a nagging injury: “Always go get seen. So often people let it rest for a week, and then they go back to it. Get an eval with a doctor or a PT. You can Google all you want but it’s not going to give you the right answer.”
  • On resting: “Understand that rest is necessary…Either you’re out for a month while you’re recouping or this is going to be a nagging issue for the rest of your life. Which one are you willing to sacrifice?”
  • Roger: “No matter what profession you’re in, no matter what your career passion is, body awareness will serve you, especially as you get older.”
  • On instant gratification: “Everyone wants to know what they’re getting out of it right now, and they want to feel what they’re getting out of it now…In our industry it’s really hard to convince people that what they’re doing is going to work because they can’t see it right away and they have to look into the future for it.”
  • On following an entire protocol: “This is not a la carte fitness. You follow the plan and you stay consistent and you stay patient.”
  • On evolving your workouts: “Make sure you’re progressing. Change things up. Add some weight to your exercises or add some reps.”
  • On enjoying the process: “What makes me so happy to be in this business is I love the delayed gratification. I love thinking wow, three months ago you could not do that. Two months ago you’re pants did not look like that. I get excited for that.”
  • On client measuring sticks: “Focus on your performance metrics and consistency in those. I promise you if we continue to crush the performance metrics before you know it those physical ones you want will be there.”
  • On her career path: “Being able to combine those two things [personal training and physical therapy] and show people how movement can be medicine is going to be huge. It’s a big trend coming up in the world, and I want to be a part of it.”
  • Simple advice: “If you’re not passionate about something, then don’t do it.”
  • Roger: “We all have bad days, but when you show up at my service oriented job, you have to turn it on. That’s the name of the game…If I bring my baggage into a day, and I can’t turn it on, I’m a shitty professional.”
  • On positivity: “No one likes a Negative Nancy or a Debbie Downer.”
  • On public accountability: “If you’re afraid to do something, tell someone. Tell everyone.”
  • On the impact of strength: “Physical strength is so empowering mentally and physically, and it can do some much for you – your figure and your mind.”
  • Roger: “If you are high performing in one area of your life, that is transferable. For all of those high performing people out there who struggle with fitness, you are a step away. You are a well structured program and accountability away from becoming a high performing fitness person. You have that mindset. It’s just a matter of prioritizing and actualizing the fitness side of things.”
  • “Stop looking at other people’s inspirational stories and become your own.”
  • Don’t take on too much: “It’s ok to say no. In the end if I say yes to someone and then I have to back out of it, I look more like the jackass…You can’t be Superman. You can’t do everything.”

RELENTLESS RESOURCES:

RELENTLESS ACTION:

Mind: “Reconnect with why you’re doing what you’re doing. If you don’t remember why you’re doing it, you’re not going to want to do it. You’re not going to stay consistent if it’s not important to you. What is your goal? How important is it to you? Is what you’re doing aligning with that?”

Body: “If you have an injury, address it. If you have a light ache, address it. Don’t let it get to the point where you spend months and months in therapy.”

Business: “Be your own brand…What’s the first thing people are going to think when your name comes up and how do you want to represent yourself?”

Why Gatorade and Paleo Don’t Work for Everyone

Relentless Main Event:

Relentless Actions (all derived from #AskGaryvee quotes):

  • Mind: “You can’t be romantic about how things should be. To be effective and have an impact, you have to join and even embrace the world that actually is.”
  • Body: “If you want to move mountains, you’ve got to come with thunder.”
  • Business: “Ideas are worthless without the execution; execution is pointless without the ideas. You have to learn to prioritize properly and quickly identify what’s going to move you further ahead and what’s going to make you stall.”

Clifton Harski: How to Be a Badass

It’s time for episode 25 of the Relentless: Real People, Real Results, Real World podcast!

In this episode I welcome in Clifton Harski –  Fitwall, Kettlebell Athletics, Animal Flow, and Movnat practitioner, coach/trainer, traveler, and gummy bear lover.

LISTEN UP!

SHOWNOTES:

  • Morning restorative cardio: “”I think of it as warming me up for the day, repairing me for the day.”
  • Feeling tired and uninspired? “I eat gummy bears…and I go to the gym and have a sweet bro pump.”
  • The Power of Habit as recommended reading: “I’m paying increased attention to the power of habits in people’s daily lives…I think people need to be aware of what they fall into.”
  • Moving around the world every 2-3 years as a result of his Dad’s CIA job: “It gave me a unique viewpoint of the world compared to most people I know.”
  • On training: “I’m not ashamed to say I’d like to be better than other people at things. Training started out to be how can I be better? Then it became a fascination. The body is pretty cool. You do things to it, it adapts and becomes stronger, faster, and more resilient. Since then training keeps progressing into more and more interest into what we can do with different tools and what the results are.”
  • Having issues with gut bloating and tying it to bread and gluten after a 6-week experiment.
  • On creating BA training: “Be able. Be athletic. Be bad-ass.”
  • Becoming a Movnat coach and workshop instructor and traveling to teach 70-80 workshops in 2011.
  • Suffering a rare knee injury via deadlift (and later a torn labrum via barbell Turkish Getup and a torn lat via rings): “I would say that it was a good thing in that I learned about rehab, scaling back training, not chasing numbers. In the longterm for me and for my clients it was a good thing. For the pocketbook and pain for the summer it was less than a good thing.”
  • On lifting human beings: “Human getups are a way safer option than a barbell getup.”
  • Lower level aerobic conditioning (130-140 heart rate) benefiting recovery, sleep, and pain tolerance.
  • His aerobic conditioning prescription:
    • 10-minutes 20-30 degree incline treadmill walk
    • 10-minutes stepper
    • 10-minutes rower
  • Travel recommendations:
    • Keep up aerobic base
    • Take your dose of Vitamin M – movement and mobility (e.g. Animal Flow in hotel room 10-30 minutes or find a yoga studio or travel with a lacrosse ball and hit trigger points)
    • Book a hotel near a Whole Foods
  • On dietary decisions: “I typically don’t eat wheat, vegetable oil, and soy. Whether it’s placebo or in my head or not, I feel better when I avoid them.”
  • 9 elements to Fitwall training: push, pull, hinge, squat, step, resist movement in core, create movement in core, quadruped movement (on all 4s), hang.
  • The difference in training predominantly females in a group setting versus males.
  • The best way to progress somebody? “Doing the same thing with enough frequency to achieve adaptation and results versus doing a bunch of random stuff whenever the hell you feel like it.”
  • Incorporating heart rate training and providing personalized target heart rate zones.
  • Burying the calorie readout: “Calories burned in a workout are not terribly important in the grand scheme of life. What we’re interested in is breaking down the tissue in a way that causes it to build back up. If it builds back up and it’s more resilient then you can do more. Then you can work out more and then you can make more change. The actual calories you burn I don’t care about at all.”
  • 3 pieces of workout advice: “The #1 most important thing is to find something that you enjoy doing because if you don’t enjoy it you won’t do it long-term. #2 you need to do some form of strength training. After that it’s a tie between aerobic training and dedicated mobility style training.”
  • Social media advice: Be active on it. Pick and medium and be consistent.
  • Not adding to the sea of noise online via repetition and only saying something when it’s poignant or different.
  • On individuality: “Figure out what works for you. You can’t read a book and try to do what the book says forever. You can read multiple books and pick up tips that have worked for other people and try them. If it works for you after a legitimate trial period then you’ve found something to do well. But if it doesn’t work for you don’t keep trying to make it work.”
  • Understanding the timing and context of advice: “Anyone that tells you to achieve balance, they have achieved balance after being unbalanced for a long period of time…You’re going to have to be out of balance for a little while to get to where you want to be before you can focus on being in balance.”
  • Endgame? Get FitWall to a couple hundred locations across the US. “I think what we’re offering is as good or better than anybody else. I believe we’ve built ourselves a platform that is scalable.”

RELENTLESS ACTION:

Read Better Than Before, by Gretchen Rubin: “One of the things that I see as maybe the biggest problem in social media is that people are constantly comparing themselves to other people. They’re very worried about are they doing things right? They’re looking at what other people are doing and they think that’s what they should be doing. The number one thing is knowing yourself and being yourself. Do you son. You have to understand what it is you like, how you feel about things, and the way that you handle things in order to be successful for yourself.
